Meta
ACTIVISM
AT SCALE
Helping Meta turn one-touch technology into a magnifier for environmental activism.
The challenge
People care deeply about climate change, but often feel powerless to make a difference. Meta’s research with Yale revealed this disconnect: 68% of U.S. Facebook users worried about climate change, yet only 19% were involved in organized action.
Earth Day presented the perfect opportunity for Meta to demonstrate its commitment to sustainability and showcase how its platforms enable collective impact. However, the company faced a significant hurdle.
How could they transform the launch of a seemingly minor feature update — Fundraising on Instagram Reels — into a compelling narrative that would resonate with users, engage media, and drive meaningful climate action?
The solution
Method elevated the story beyond a simple product announcement by focusing on real-world impact. Instead of leading with technical details, we centered on how Meta’s platforms had already helped people donate $150 million to environmental causes.
We partnered with influencers like Pattie Gonia, Lil Dicky and Zyahna Bryant to demonstrate the new feature in action, each raising funds for environmental organizations through Instagram Reels while sharing personal stories about climate activism. Amplified through paid social media in partnership with Bustle Media group, we built a movement that went beyond a simple product update.
With the momentum from this social media broadside, we secured an exclusive with the Associated Press philanthropy editor, packaging the update within a broader story about digital activism and climate change. The piece featured compelling nonprofit voices like Outdoor Afro, whose founder shared how Meta’s platforms accelerated their mission.
The impact
What began as a feature launch transformed into a movement that reached 33.3 million people on Instagram through content creator partnerships. The Associated Press exclusive generated a ripple effect, with syndication to over 160 outlets including CBS News and U.S. News & World Report.
The campaign secured 453 broadcast stories reaching an estimated 9.4 million viewers, along with original coverage in Mashable, TechCrunch, Engadget and Adweek. Beyond impressive metrics, the campaign demonstrated how technology could address climate inaction by making environmental support more accessible.
As Rue Mapp of Outdoor Afro put it, “People give to people. They don’t give to vague ideas or concepts.” By connecting faces to causes and simplifying action, Meta’s campaign showed how small individual contributions could combine to create meaningful environmental impact at global scale.
